January

The night was a bit of a blur after that.

Kali leaned back in to kiss Rona, and it must have been obvious her heart wasn’t into it, because Kali questioned it. Rona muttered something about alcohol and pulled Kali into a bone-crushing hug, keeping her that way until they both fell asleep.

Rona’s dreams were not pleasant. The white Rogue ran in and out of fog, returning every now and again as Kali covered in blood, holding the heads of her pack members—both their human heads and their wolf heads.

Rona immediately wrapped her arms tighter around Kali when she finally woke up, and forced herself to stay awake for the rest of the night.

Kali had to leave early the next morning to go to work, and Rona was a little relieved. She didn’t have it in her to act normal. Payton and Zoe were both horribly hungover, and spent most of the day sleeping, which meant Rona could hide in her room and try to deal with things.

Kali was the white Rogue. That was the only explanation. The white one hadn’t appeared until September, the full moon after Kali said she had been bitten. It had to be her. But who had bitten her? There had been no signs of Rogues in the area before September, and Rona was confident that was something someone would have noticed. She wondered when Kali had been bitten. If it hadn’t been a full moon, that would have erased any doubt. Rogues only changed on the full moon.

Who else could have bitten her, though? The only option was a Shifter—when someone born with the gene bit someone without it, that created Rogues. No one in the pack would have done that. Rona was confident in that. Which left two options. One—there was a traitor Shifter running around, not associated with any pack. Or two—a Shifter from a nearby pack had come into town and bitten Kali.

Rona had never understood how the packs could have been at war with each other during the early days. They all wanted the same thing, after all—to protect their territories and their people. Now, though, she kind of got it. If a Shifter from another pack had bitten Kali and caused all this trouble, Rona would happily declare war on every pack in a fifty-mile radius. She had that power. She could do it. It would be useless, and the Fairport pack would probably be annihilated in the process, but it was absolutely within her rights as the Alpha to go out there right now and tell every single pack they were at war now.

She reigned in that instinct. She had no proof, and wouldn’t earn herself any sympathy or points by being hotheaded.

Payton’s door opened around noon, and Rona looked through her own open door to see Payton groaning and half-stumbling to the stairs, mumbling something about water. “Amateur,” Rona called, glad for a momentary distraction from her thoughts. “Should have put water near your bed before you went to sleep last night.
